Spin-Off Projects

Here are some spin-off projects of the NIFF.

1. Nara Cinémathèque

Nara Cinématèque is a “moving movie theater” in theater-less Nara City, inspired from the desire to help continue and ingrain the joy and culture of watching films. Since April, 2013, we set-up a temporary movie theater the second Friday of every month, and show films in Nara City. Before and after the screening, a navigator gives commentary on the film and the audience share their thoughts, offering everyone an even deeper movie experience.

2. Cinema Under the Stars

We set-up a gigantic screen in Nara Park with a view of Todai-ji Temple and Mt. Wakakusa, or on the grounds of Heijo Palace, which has counted the last 1,300 years. In this Starry Night Screening, visitors can enjoy a film under the night sky. Famous, nostalgic films and those stars of the silver screen rise up into the calming darkness of the evening. This is an outdoor program that we can only do in Nara.

3. Special Screenings at Shrines and Temples

NIFF is grateful for the cooperation of many shrines and temples in Nara Prefecture. In past film festivals, we have held sacred and special screenings at well-known ancient temples and shrines, such as Kasuga-taisha Shrine, Todai-ji Temple, Gango-ji Temple, Hokke-ji Temple, and Yoshino’s Kinpusen-ji Temple. Nature, life, Shinto, and Buddhism. This is a space where we can come face-to-face with what's really important, through spirituality and film.

4. Nara Art Night

In this program, the ATWAS artist team creates colorful installations and performances using light, sounds, and the darkness of the night. The images, sounds, stage art, sculpting, costumes, and physical expressions create an illusionary world in the quiet, dark night. ATWAS is a group without permanent members, but with artists who bring their own unique style to a project and perform works that fully express that style.

5.Bicycle-Generated Screening

The electricity used to project the film is generated by pedaling a bicycle in this participatory project. Through film, we are offering the opportunity to experience the feeling of creating electricity.

6. Interacting with the World

Nara International Film Festival has created partnerships and worked with other film festivals and educational institutions, both in Japan and abroad. We also keep an eye on the many young directors who began with our film festival, and the success of their hard work.

7. Obanaza Screening

The former “Obanaza” has long been adored as both a stage theater and a movie theater, and this project screens films there once again. Located where Hotel Obana is today, Obanaza was originally constructed in 1909 by the men of Naramachi as a small theater with a revolving stage. In 1920, the Nakano family, who had been involved in the film industry in Osaka, began operating it as Obana Theater, the first movie theater in Nara City. Though the theater sadly closed, the Obanaza movie theater will be revived during our film festival at the Hotel Obana's Sakura-no-ma. We are showing many great films.
