HIDE & SEEK
Q & A

After the death of their mother, a young man becomes obligated to look after his acutely socially withdrawn younger brother. Already a hard worker, he is forced to once again redouble his efforts in the face of greater responsibilities. These two brothers have opposite attitudes towards the expectations of society, and yet despite all their differences, whether they like it or not, they will always be brothers.

I was born and raised in Japan, but in recent years, I've lived overseas from time to time. I've realized that the Japanese people tend to fit in the "ideal life" in accordance with social norms. The youths despise the way that adults are stuck in their own standard of value. However, the youths can't avoid being influenced by social expectations.
Those kinds of expectations can be even more evident within family circles and often generate misunderstandings and anger, because they care for each other.
In this film, I depicted a family dilemma caused by social expectations and the values of contemporary Japanese society.
