I found Fuwari in my first year at Osaka University of Arts. At that time, I was thinking about an essay on the subject of "Attractive Old Women" for a class by Director Kazuo Hara, and dropped in a cheap candy shop. The shop was Fuwari, a candy shop. There, I turned my camera on immediately, fascinated by the maternal attractiveness of Akemi and children who were suffering but struggling for their lives. In my high school junior year, I had a truancy problem. (I could barely attend school and distressed myself for three years at that time.) I might have empathized with the children there because of my personal background. Filming them, I went to Fuwari almost every day for three years; I ate cheap snacks with children, played hide and seek, and even went to a karaoke occasionally. Those days were my life. I hope that my memory with Akemi and the children in Fuwari touches your heart.
