[LIFE AND DEATH ON THE SHORE]

– I wanted to live together with you.

December 1944, Amami Kagerou Island (modeled after Kakeroma Island). Ohira Toe, who works as a national school teacher, meets Lieutenant Saku, the commander of a newly stationed navy kamikaze boat. They get to know each other because Saku asked to borrow a book for the education of the soldiers, and they have a good relationship with each other. Toe is attracted to Saku, who is loved by the children of the island and prefers to sing island songs rather than military songs. Before long, Toe begins repeatedly meeting with Saku. However, as time passed, enemy attacks intensified, Okinawa fell, and a new type of bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. And the day has finally come for Saku to sortie. Wearing her mother’s mourning dress and holding a dagger to her chest, Toe rushes out of the house and rushes to the usual beach mindlessly
