Catalan Focus

Section

This year we will screen six films made by women directors from Catalonia, Spain.

The Institut Ramon Llull (institution which promotes Catalan language and culture abroad) and Catalan Films & TV (the program for the international promotion of Catalan audiovisual industry used by ICEC/Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies) is pleased to present this Focus as part of the program of the prestigious Nara International Film Festival (NIFF), which falls under the Catalan Government’s Japan Plan. A Focus about films directed by women, curated by the Catalan filmmaker Lluís Miñarro.

Sara, 22, has just had a baby and wants to lead a normal life with her younger brother. After years of absence and a long period in jail, their father, Manuel, decides to suddenly reappear in their lives. Just as things start to get better for her, Sara will have to make the toughest decision of her life. She will need to ward off her father from her beloved ones or face the fear to start from scratch.

The Perseids

Local tales tell of a small town built on top of a Spanish Civil War battlefield. Mar arrives at the town to spend the strangest summer of her life after her parents’ divorce. She takes refuge in these mysterious post-war tales and in a group of teenagers that adhere to some rules unknown to her. She discovers a fascinating place and makes peace with her dad, mending family ties with this country’s memorial history.
