Story

The first feature film directed by Victor Erice.

The story is about a beekeeping family of four living in a small, remote village of the Castille in 1940, the year after the civil war has just ended with the Franco’s victory over the Republic. One day, a track comes to the village. It brings the movie “Frankenstein” there. The movie screen shows a beautiful scene that Frankenstein meets a little girl Mary on the waterfront. Ana, a daughter of the family, hears from her older sister Isabel that Frankenstein hides himself in a house located on the outskirts of the village, and she visits the house over and over again. The man she sees there is an injured soldier...

This movie won Golden Seashell at the San Sebastian International Film Festival in 1973. It was asked to be shown at the London Film Festival. In the Chicago International Film Festival,

the movie won the Silver Hugo Award. It was overwhelmingly praised by the Semaine Internationale De La Critique of Cannes Film Festival. Furthermore, this masterpiece which received rave reviews both in and outside Spain made a clean sweep of the awards for best picture, best cinematographer, best original soundtrack, and acting in the Spanish domestic film festival.
